Originally from Quebec, Marie-Josée Proulx has been pursuing her passion for breeding top-quality sport horses for nearly 30 years. A lifelong rider with experience in both hunter/jumpers and dressage, Proulx’s parents come from farming families where horses were the “tractors” of the age. Her love for breeding animals developed at an early age. In 1990, after graduating from the Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) de Montréal with her degree in finance, Proulx went to work for the family business in Ottawa, where she also purchased her first KWPN-NA accredited Thoroughbred broodmares. In short order, Proulx was introduced to the KWPN breed, producing several foals from Dutch Iron Spring Farm (ISF) stallions.

The Canadian breeder began her own family in 1999, and in the years that followed, developed a fondness for the petite and versatile Canadian Horse breed. Honing her reputation as a top-quality producer of Canadian horses for driving and dressage, Proulx went on to serve as President of the Canadian Horse Breeders Association (CHBA) for more than five years. In 2013, she decided to return to her Dutch roots, importing three KWPN mares from the Netherlands and, two years later, purchasing her 100-acre breeding farm in Dunvegan, Ontario.

Six more KWPN mares would join Proulx’s string over the next four years, among them the breeder’s “pride and joy,” Evita (Rhodium / Juventus). In 2018 when, after several attempts, Evita had failed to produce a foal from frozen semen, Proulx began shopping for her own KWPN stallions, importing Wynton (Jazz Stb pref / Matador II / Rubinstein I) and Zhivago (Krack C stb / Jazz Stb pref / Ulft) from the Netherlands in 2018. Canadream Farm’s first, official crop of KWPN foals hit the ground in 2015, with three earning 1st premium at keurings. In the years since, Proulx has bred four of the top-10 KWPN foals in North America, earning her KWPN-NA Silver Breeder Award in 2019, with Gold-level expected when her current crop(s) are presented at keurings in 2021 or 2022. Now based at its fully renovated, top of the line breeding facility in Eastern Ontario, Canadream Farm is committed to producing the highest quality KWPN foals in North America—with the talent, soundness, and ability to compete at the international level and beyond. With a hands-on approach to her craft, Marie-Josée Proulx is dedicated to providing her clients with the advice, support, and services they need regarding all aspects of the breeding industry, quarantining imports, or when purchasing their next, upper-level dressage prospect.
